UNHCR: Eritreans by far largest refugee group in Israel
By BEN HARTMAN
10/03/2010

90% of Eritrean asylum-seekers are men, many of whom fled indefinite compulsory military duty.

Eritreans constitute by far the largest population of asylum-seekers in Israel, according to the United Nations high commissioner for refugees.

Sharon Harel, assistant protection officer for the UNHCR in Tel Aviv, said Monday there were around 8,500 Eritrean refugees in the country, as opposed to some 5,000 to 6,000 from Sudan. (more…)

President Isaias Afwerki Talk to Al Jazeera

Twenty years after the liberation from Ethiopia, Eritrea, Africa’s youngest nation, has emerged as strategically vital to the stability of the region and the wider global agenda.

Eritrea is struggling to balance the needs of its people with the perceived threats to the nation.

Al Jazeera’s Jane Dutton conducts a rare interview with Isaisas Afwerki, the president of Eritrea.

Al Jazeera confronted him with the allegations about Eritrea’s ties with Iran, Hamas, al Shabab in Somalia and rebel groups in Sudan and Houthis in Yemen.

“This is a deliberate distortion of facts, where is the evidence, these are fabrications, where is your evidence?”, he said.

“How possibly could one blame Eritrea for sympathising or supporting one group over another in Somalia we have never done that.” he said.

When asked about Eritrea’s relation with Ethiopia today and the border dispute he said: “This border issue war was a senseless conflict instigated by the US.

“It is a cover up for the failures of the misguided policies of the United States in the horn of Africa for the last 20 years.

“It is not a problem with Ethiopia we have worked with these people for almost two decades to remove a government in Ethiopia, and we want to see a relationship between Eritrea and Ethiopia based on mutual respect and common interest,” he said.

“There is no presence for Iran in this region, Eritrea is not for sale, not for Iran, Israel, the United States or anybody,” he said.

Talk to Al Jazeera can be seen from Saturday, February 20 at the following times GMT: 1130, 2230; Sunday: 0130 and 1900.

REFILE-Three mine workers shot dead in Eritrea

* Mineral sector important for economic growth

* Eritrea says isolated deaths won’t destabilise industry

By Jeremy Clarke

ASMARA, Oct 7 (Reuters) – Three Eritreans working for Australian company Chalice Gold Mines Limited (CHN.AX: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) have been killed in a shooting incident in the Red Sea state, the company said in a statement on Wednesday.

Such violent deaths, uncommon in Eritrea, are likely to raise concerns among foreign investors in an industry many see as a lifeline to its agriculture-based economy, weakened by the global economic downturn and at the mercy of irregular rainfall.

“(The incident) on a public road 110 km south of its Zara Gold Project earlier this week has resulted in the tragic death of one of its Eritrean employees and two of its Eritrean contractors,” a statement said.

“Based on the information available, the incident was an isolated event unrelated to the company and its operations at the Zara Gold Project,” it added.

The Zara project is one of the largest in the country and is believed to hold 1 million ounces of gold. The company is still undertaking a study and does not expect to start production before 2011.

The deaths come only days after another Australian mining company, Gippsland Limited (GIPq.L: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), was granted three prospecting licences in the country. [ID:nL5109053]

More than a dozen foreign companies are now exploring or about to explore in the Red Sea state, a nation seen on the threshold of a minerals boom that could boost its economy.

Mining officials are adamant the deaths will not destabilise the industry.

“This is very uncommon in Eritrea. It has nothing to do with the project,” said Alem Kibreab, director general of mines for the Energy and Mines Ministry.

“This will not destabilise (the industry) because it is such an isolated incident. It is distressful but it will not have a big impact,” he said.

Eritrea’s mineral potential is largely unexploited, apart from small-scale artisan mining and some minor extraction by Italians during the colonial era. Some bigger miners were scared off by the 1998-2000 border war with Ethiopia.

Eritrea’s most advanced project is Bisha, run by Canada’s Nevsun Resources Ltd (NSU.TO: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), and in which the state holds a 40 percent stake. Its 27 million tonnes of ore are believed to contain 1 million ounces of gold, 700-800 million lb of copper and 1 billion lb of zinc. (Editing by Simon Jessop)

Bin Laden threatens Americans in new tape

Filed under: Events — eritrearealclearpolitics @ 3:32 pm

Associated Press , THE JERUSALEM POST

Al Qaida leader Osama bin Laden threatened Americans in a new audio tape Wednesday, saying President Barack Obama inflamed hatred toward the US by ordering Pakistan to crack down on terrorists in Swat Valley and block Islamic law there.

Bin Laden claimed US pressure led to a campaign of “killing, fighting, bombing and destruction” that prompted the exodus of a million Muslims from Swat Valley in northwest Pakistan.

The message was broadcast for the first time on pan-Arab Al-Jazeera Television around the same time Obama touched down in Saudi Arabia at the start of a Mideast visit. He is trying repair relations with the Muslim world frayed under the previous Bush administration.

“Elderly people, children and women fled their homes and lived in tents as refugees after they have lived in dignity in their homes,” bin Laden said. “Let the American people be ready to reap what the White House leaders have sown,” he added.

“Obama and his administration have sown new seeds to increase hatred and revenge on America,” bin Laden said. “The number of these seeds is equal to the number of displaced people from Swat Valley.”

Pakistan’s military offensive to expel the Taliban from Swat Valley was launched in late April after the militants abandoned a peace deal with the government that gave them control of the region.

The offensive, strongly backed by Washington, is seen as a test of Pakistan’s resolve against militants in the northwestern border region near Afghanistan. Pakistanis tired of militant attacks in the country that have killed hundreds of civilians have also supported the campaign. But the fighting has uprooted some 3 million people.

Bin Laden focused entirely on Pakistan, claiming President Asif Ali Zardari was paid by the White House to start the crackdown.

Al-Jazeera aired excerpts of the tape and did not say how it was obtained.

Bin Laden, whose last message was released in mid-March, has been sparing in his criticism of Obama in the past. In January, he said only that the US president had received a “heavy inheritance” from his predecessor.

However, his deputy, Ayman al-Zawahri has repeatedly condemned Obama, even using racial slurs.

Bin Laden’s message followed just hours after al-Zawahri criticized Obama’s upcoming speech on Thursday to the Islamic world in Cairo, saying it will not change the “bloody messages” the US military is sending Muslims in American wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

BILDERBERG – SECRET WORLD GOVERNMENT

Filed under: Events — eritrearealclearpolitics @ 9:47 am

The annual Bilderberg Group conference is literally the most important meeting in the world. It is attended annually by more world leaders, more top politicians, more royalty, and business leaders, than any other gathering of any kind anywhere. The G8 summit and World Economic Forums are mere side-shows by comparison. No other meeting is attended by the leaders of all the major international institutions, such as the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the United Nations, and the European Union.

We are all expected to believe that the Bilderberg group does not run the world, yet it members most definitely are the men who run the world. Even without Bilderberg, the world is undoubtedly controlled by a small number of unelected wealthy white men who wield more power than any national government. Bilderberg simply provides a forum for these men to formally meet each year.

The Bilderberg Group is not democratic or accountable to the people of the world, and neither are the World Bank, the IMF, the UN, or the world most powerful banks and corporations. Yet the decisions taken by these groups affect every human being on earth, now and far ahead into the future. And Bilderberg Group meetings are never reported in the news.

Their first recorded meeting was at the Bilderberg Hotel in Oosterbeek, Holland, from 29th May to 31st May, 1954. The chairman was H.R.H. Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands. Since then this elite global group, which may be much older, has been called the Bilderberg Group.

The people who are invited to the Bilderberg Group, and the topics discussed, are official secrets which the media is forbidden from reporting. Bilderberg is effectively an elite secret society ruling the world from behind closed doors and outside the democratic framework.

In a documentary yesterday evening the BBC disclosed that the decision to create a European Union was taken at the first official Bilderberg Group meeting in 1953, but the rest of their programme was devoted to portraying Bilderberg as an extension of the political pantomime that the public witnesses every day.

Who organizes the Bilderberg Group? Who pays for it? What are they discussing? What are they deciding?

When the world’s elite meet, it is our interests that they have in mind or their own?

SOURCES:

BBC News, “Bilderberg: The ultimate conspiracy theory”, 3 June 2004. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/3773019.stm

The Bilderberg group, an elite coterie of Western thinkers and power-brokers, has been accused of fixing the fate of the world behind closed doors. As the organisation marks its 50th anniversary, rumours are more rife than ever.

Given its reputation as perhaps the most powerful organisation in the world, the Bilderberg group doesn’t go a bundle on its switchboard operations.

Telephone inquiries are met with an impersonal female voice – the Dutch equivalent of the BT Callminder woman – reciting back the number and inviting callers to “leave a message after the tone”.

Anyone who accidentally dialled the number would probably think they had stumbled on just another residential answer machine.

But behind this ultra-modest façade lies one of the most controversial and hotly-debated alliances of our times.
On Thursday the Bilderberg group marks its 50th anniversary with the start of its yearly meeting.

For four days some of the West’s chief political movers, business leaders, bankers, industrialists and strategic thinkers will hunker down in a five-star hotel in northern Italy to talk about global issues.

What sets Bilderberg apart from other high-powered get-togethers, such as the annual World Economic Forum (WEF), is its mystique.

Not a word of what is said at Bilderberg meetings can be breathed outside. No reporters are invited in and while confidential minutes of meetings are taken, names are not noted.

The shadowy aura extends further – the anonymous answerphone message, for example; the fact that conference venues are kept secret. The group, which includes luminaries such as Henry Kissinger and former UK chancellor Kenneth Clarke, does not even have a website.

In the void created by such aloofness, an extraordinary conspiracy theory has grown up around the group that alleges the fate of the world is decided by Bilderberg.

In Yugoslavia, leading Serbs have blamed Bilderberg for triggering the war which led to the downfall of Slobodan Milosevic. The Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh, the London nail-bomber David Copeland and Osama Bin Laden are all said to have bought into the theory that Bilderberg pulls the strings with which national governments dance.

And while hardline right-wingers and libertarians accuse Bilderberg of being a liberal Zionist plot, leftists such as activist Tony Gosling are equally critical.

A former journalist, Mr Gosling runs a campaign against the group from his home in Bristol, UK.

“My main problem is the secrecy. When so many people with so much power get together in one place I think we are owed an explanation of what is going on.

Mr Gosling seizes on a quote from Will Hutton, the British economist and a former Bilderberg delegate, who likened it to the annual WEF gathering where “the consensus established is the backdrop against which policy is made worldwide”.

“One of the first places I heard about the determination of US forces to attack Iraq was from leaks that came out of the 2002 Bilderberg meeting,” says Mr Gosling.

But “privacy, rather than secrecy”, is key to such a meeting says Financial Times journalist Martin Wolf, who has been invited several times in a non-reporting role.

As an up-and-coming statesmen in the 1950s, Denis Healey, who went on to become a Labour chancellor, was one of the four founding members of Bilderberg (which was named after the hotel in Holland where the first meeting was held in 1954).

“There’s absolutely nothing in it. We never sought to reach a consensus on the big issues at Bilderberg. It’s simply a place for discussion,” says Lord Healey.

That activists have seized on Bilderberg is no suprise to Alasdair Spark, an expert in conspiracy theories.
“The idea that a shadowy clique is running the world is nothing new.

For hundreds of years people have believed the world is governed by a cabal of Jews.

“Shouldn’t we expect that the rich and powerful organise things in their own interests. It’s called capitalism.”

Dr. Jordan Gebre-Medhin Has pass away

Filed under: Events — eritrearealclearpolitics @ 8:51 am

Dr. Jordan Gebre-Medhin, scholar, professor and author, passed away on Monday, December 8 around 9 PM at his home in Cambridge, MA. He is survived by his wife Priscilla and his son Biniam (Benjamim) who were by his side in his last hours.

Dr. Jordan is perhaps best known for authoring “Peasants and Nationalism in Eritrea: A Critique of Ethiopian Studies.” (Red Sea Press, 1989.) The book was based on his doctoral thesis and it was one of the first to attempt to correct the prevailing and erroneous characterizations of Eritrea’s two liberation fronts.

A professor long associated with Northeastern University, Dr. Jodran Gebre-Medhin is described by his friends as a “committed nationalist and a dedicated pan-Africanist” and one whose “love of life was as big as his build.”
May God offer his family and comrades strength that helps them to over comes this tragic shack!
